10 Tips for Better Golf Practice

By Brendon Elliott, PGA

Most golfers understand that the path to improvement is paved with dedicated practice. But without a structured approach, even the most dedicated hours can slip by without delivering tangible results.

That’s why I want to share my top ten tips for better practice that will not only enhance your skills but also make your time on the course and at the range far more productive and enjoyable.

1. Set a Regular Weekly Practice Schedule

Think of your golf practice as an essential appointment that deserves a spot on your calendar, just like a meeting or a family commitment. When you carve out specific days and times for practice, you’re sending a clear message to yourself: golf is a priority.

By committing to a regular schedule, you’ll find that consistency becomes your ally. In those dedicated moments on the course, your skills sharpen, your confidence grows, and your enjoyment deepens. So go ahead—make that commitment! Your future self on the green will thank you for it.

2. Incorporate Time for All Areas of the Game

To elevate your golf game, avoid the trap of focusing only on your driver or putting stroke. Golf requires balance, so dedicate your practice to every facet: driving, iron play, chipping, and putting. Spend 30 minutes on your short game, another 30 at the range, and finish with focused putting practice. This well-rounded approach will improve your skills and make the game more enjoyable. Embrace the challenge, mix it up, and watch yourself become a more versatile and confident player! Let’s take your game to the next level!

3. Journal Your Sessions

Starting a practice journal is a powerful way to track your growth. After each session, note what you focused on, what clicked, and where you struggled. This simple habit keeps you accountable and reveals patterns in your progress. Reflecting on your entries helps create a roadmap for future sessions, making your practice more intentional. Celebrate your wins, big or small, and watch your improvement unfold. Your future self will thank you!

4. Incorporate Apps and Other Technology

Make the most of the available technology by utilizing apps designed for golfers, such as V1 Golf or SportsBox AI. Whether you’re tracking statistics, learning new drills, or receiving swing tips, integrating these tools into your routine can enhance your practice. Many apps provide immediate feedback, allowing you to make real-time adjustments that support your development. Also, consider purchasing and using a personal radar such as the Rapsodo MLM2PRO. Devices such as these have come down considerably in price in recent years.

5. Include Stretching and Fitness in Your Plan

Physical fitness plays a crucial role in golf performance and injury prevention. Dedicate some time before or after your practice to stretching and fitness routines that focus on flexibility and core strength. Simple exercises tailored to boost your golf game not only improve your swing but also keep you in shape for the long haul.

6. Gamify Your Practice Sessions

Turn your practice into an exciting challenge by adding a competitive element! Whether it’s with friends or personal goals, try focusing on achievements like making a certain number of putts or hitting specific targets. This gamification adds fun and boosts motivation. Picture the satisfaction of reaching those goals and the thrill of friendly rivalries! By making practice enjoyable, you’ll improve your skills and look forward to every session. Embrace the challenge and watch yourself thrive!

7. Include On-Course Practice in Your Plan

While range practice is essential, don’t underestimate the value of playing actual rounds. Integrate on-course practice into your routine, focusing on specific aspects of your game—such as alignment or the short game—during play. Treat these sessions as learning opportunities to apply everything you’ve been working on in a realistic setting.

8. Consider Creating a Home Practice Area

Enhance your practice flexibility by establishing a dedicated area at home. Whether it’s a putting green in your yard or a net for full swings, investing in a home practice setup enables you to hone your skills without the added travel time. Regular practice at home can keep your game sharp and ready for the course.

9. Use Video

Unlock your potential by recording your practice sessions with your smartphone! Watching your slow-motion swings reveals flaws you might miss in real time. This powerful visual feedback helps you focus and improve your technique more effectively. Don’t just practice—practice smart; start recording your practice sessions today!

10. Create S.M.A.R.T. Goals to Achieve

Finally, give your practice sessions a clear purpose by setting S.M.A.R.T. goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Rather than simply wanting to “get better,” aim to improve your putting accuracy by a specific percentage within a defined timeframe. Establish clear objectives, break them down into actionable steps, and celebrate your achievements along the way.
